18-Dec-2009

Conductors: Fred Evans, Gwyn Evans, Bari Williams
Beaumaris Leisure Centre
Saturday and Sunday 5th & 6th December

BeaumarisWith 3 weeks until the big day, Beaumaris Band kicked off their yuletide celebrations with two sell out concerts at the Beaumaris Leisure Centre on Saturday, 5th  and Sunday, 6th December.

The audience were treated to a themed concert based on the poem 'The Night Before Christmas', and every member of the organisation had made a huge effort to wear period costumes from the Victorian era to add to the occasion.

150 members

In all five bands appeared on stage, with almost 150 members in total.

The first half saw performances by the youngest members in the Beginner and Intermediate Bands (both conducted by Fred Evans M.B.E.), and the Youth Band (conducted by Gwyn Evans and Bari Gwilliam).

The youngsters were rewarded for their efforts with a well deserved ovation by the enthusiastic audience, which included members of the senior band who are always keen to support the next generation of players.

New line up

The first half line up was completed by the newly created “L.S.W.” (Last of the Summer Winds) Band, again conducted by Fred. Although technically the youngest band of all, having been formed only a year or so ago, the membership of this band is reserved exclusively for the more mature members of the local community who come together once a week for a night of music making and a jolly good laugh.

Their enthusiasm and camaraderie shone through during the performance, and all at the band are extremely proud of their achievements.

The second half saw the appearance of the senior band, current North Wales Champions and winners at the National Eisteddfod of Wales, under the direction of Gwyn Evans.

Video screens

Two huge video screens were erected which played video footage to coincide with such Christmas classics as 'Sleigh Ride', 'Troika', and 'Once in Royal David City'.

Always at the forefront of entertainment in the area the band wanted to give their loyal audience something extra this year and the use of the video to enhance the evening certainly made an impact.

During the programme the band presented Gwyn with a special award to thank him for all his efforts during the past 12 months. The concert ended with a standing ovation as the band marched off stage with a rendition of 'Jingle Bells'.

Highlights

In an evening of many highlights a special mention must go to Bronwen Evans for her stunning vocal solo, Sion Mason for his incredible drum kit cadenza, and to all those members who gave their first public performance at the concerts.

The band is already planning for next year, with talk of expanding to three concerts due to increase in demand, and would like to thank all who continue to support the band.
