Oxted Band Spring Concert

8-May-2009

Hurst Green
Soloist: John Doyle
Saturday 18th April

The packed audience at the Oxted Band’s Spring Concert at Hurst Green on Saturday 18th April gave a very warm welcome to guest soloist John Doyle from the Black Dyke Band, clearly demonstrating their enthusiasm and appreciation of his outstanding skill and virtuosity.

With humour and style, John first introduced his audience to the finer points of his instruments of the evening - the flugelhorn, cornet and trumpet.

Demonstrating the range of these three instruments, he first played the Adagio from Concerto de Aranjuez by Rodrigo, arr. Kevin Bolton on flugelhorn, followed by “Blessed Assurance” by Phoebe P.Knapp arr.Stephen Bulla on the trumpet.

In the second half he played “Share my Yoke”  by Joy Webb arr. Ivor Bosanko on cornet and “Children of Sanchez” by Chuck Mangione arr. Reid Gilje once again on flugelhorn.

The audience were then treated to a very special encore – “Doyle’s Lament”. Throughout, his passion and musicianship shone through.

Inspired by John’s virtuosity, the Oxted Band provided one of their best concerts yet with an excellent overall programme of music including the Overture from Yeoman of the Guard by Sullivan, Slaughter on 10th Avenue by Richard Rogers arr. Sandy Smith, and a selection from Capriccio Italien by Tchaikovsky arr.Denis Wright.

The final encore was “Buglers’ Holiday” for which John Doyle joined the cornet section much to everyone’s delight.

The concert made an excellent start to Oxted Band’s Summer season when as usual it will be playing at events and venues around the South East, including the Pantiles Tunbridge Wells on 28th June and Eastbourne Bandstand on 4th July.
