Truro
Wednesday 10th September
Camborne Town Band once again held a fantastic night of varied entertainment at the Hall for Cornwall in Truro, with the dynamic Richard Evans leading the evening and conducting the band.
British Talent
This time their guests were the newly formed Cornwall Boys Choir under the direction of Angela Renshaw, and the dance group, Flava, who recently reached the live semi-finals of ITV’s ‘Britain’s Got Talent’.
The band, which was set-up in an enlarged formation across tiered staging, opened the evening with Peter Graham’s ‘Academic Festival Fanfare’ before featuring Les Kneebone on soprano cornet in Philip Sparke’s ‘Flowerdale’. This set was brought to a close with the music from ‘Oklahoma’.
Matrix
Cornwall Boys Choir, accompanied by Phil Davey, then performed a selection of music from ‘Oliver’ which included ‘Consider Yourself’, ‘Where is Love’ and ‘Be Back Soon’. This was followed, in huge contrast, by the hip-hop dance group, Flava, performing ‘Matrix’.
James Bond
The first half ended with another set from the band which opened with an exciting arrangement by Goff Richards of a ‘James Bond Selection’.
The band’s principal cornet, Kayleigh Rowe, was then featured in a beautiful rendition of the Salvation Army number ‘Don’t Doubt Him Now’ before they performed an excellent arrangement by previous player and MD, Steve Thomas, of ‘Macarthur Park’.
Atmospheric
To open the second half, the band performed Joseph Turin’s beautiful ‘Hymn for Diana’ and then euphonium soloist, Robert Jose, took to the stage to perform Ben Tubb’s atmospheric ‘Amidst a Celtic Dream’. This was followed by Peter Graham’s arrangement of ‘Crimond’.
Angela, Phil and the Cornwall Boys Choir then returned with a Zulu traditional song ‘Siyahamba’ before singing Mary Donnolly’s ‘We Are the Young’. They brought their last set to a close with ‘Dodi Li’ by Nira Chen. Flava then returned with ‘The Way I Are’.
Breath taking close
To end the evening, the band took to the stage once more, starting with Ray Farr’s exciting arrangement of ‘Toccata in D Minor’ which featured kit player, Steve Day, and xylophonist, Jeremy Taylor. The last soloist for the evening was trombonist, Barry Buist, who performed Peter Kneal’s ‘Blue John’.
The concert came to a breath-taking close with Howard Snells’ powerful arrangement of ‘Procession to the Minster’.
