The Solent Area Fellowship Band presented a fund raising concert for The Salvation Army’s Chikankata Hospital (Zambia) at Southampton Shirley Corps, on Friday 20th June.
Following the band’s first item, a March Fantasy, “The Joy-Bringer” (Kenneth Downie), Major Alan Hill (Commanding Officer, Southampton Shirley Corps) welcomed the band and congregation, before leading the song, “O, Happy Day” and offering prayer.
The band’s programme continued with two movements from Morley Calvert’s, “Canadian Folk Song Suite”, Alex Manning contributed a flugel horn solo, “Feelings” arranged by Derek Ashmore and the band’s principal tenor horn, Callam Carter, played Gordon Langford’s arrangement of “The Lark in the Clear Air”.
Following the Meditation, “St Bees” (Lloyd Scott), a euphonium duet, “Calon Lan” arranged by Eric Ball, was played by Bryan Norman and Tony Unwin.
Major Adrian Allman, (Southern Divisional Headquarters) the band’s Executive Officer, outlined some of the activities and challenges at the Chikankata Mission Station, before inviting the congregation to take part in a collection. The band played Erik Leidzen’s March, “In the King’s Service”, during the collection.
Second half
Further second half items from the band included, “Love Changes Everything” (Stephen Bulla’s arrangement of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s song), a Traditional Welsh Air, “All Through the Night” (arr. Gordon Langford) and Goff Richard’s brass band arrangement of another Andrew Lloyd Webber number “Memory” from the Musical, “Cats”.
Major Derek Smith read from Scripture before the band played a Festival Arrangement, “The Blessing” by William Himes.
David Wicks, from the host Corps gave a vote of thanks and announced that £900 had so far been raised for the Chikankata Hospital.
Bandmaster Chris Kennett thanked the congregation for their attendance and generosity before conducting the band in three movements from Peter Graham’s, “The Haslemere Suite”.
An evening of music and fellowship concluded with the congregation and band joining in the singing of Evening Hymn.
The concert (which in total finally raised £945) brought to a conclusion the band’s 12th season since inauguration and we would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who continue to support the activities of the band.
