If you were reviewing wine you would use such exotic terms as: ‘Mellow','Vibrant', ‘Soft and Velvety' and rich in ‘Berry Fruit'. Wonderful terms that conjure up thoughts of something really quite special. Something you'd look forward to and something you'll remember for a long time. But unlike a wine that's gone and consigned to a memory, you can listen to this CD over and over and enjoy the occasion.

So is the case of ‘Cornet Cantabile', by Trevor and Betty Bremner. Recorded in New Plymouth in 1999, before the Bremners left New Zealand shores permanently, this CD sets the standard in some truly wonderful cornet playing.

Trevor Bremner requires little introduction in antipodean banding circles. He's won more championships that you could possibly give due credit. With that reputation Trevor delivers on the preciseness, expressiveness and emotion that will only come with such expertise.

Cornet Cantabile follows several years on from an earlier recording entitled ‘Reflections of Brass', which the Bremners will remember purely from a technical point of view. It was produced in those heady days of - Cassette tapes (Does anyone have these still!), In behind the scenes of this recording, is a bit of a who's who of the banding world Downunder. The 18 piece backing band for some tracks has well known names as Mike Ford on Solo Horn, Daryl Farley on Bass Trombone and John Everitt on Percussion to single out a few. Oh, and conducted by none other than long time friend Kevin Jarrett M.B.E. who recently adjudicated at the Australian Nationals in Adelaide this year. We can only imagine the gathering after this CD was recorded!

For the main though, Trevor is accompanied by wife Betty who has been accompanying brass soloists since 1963. Listen to this CD and you'll be witness to that invisible understanding, that innate sixth sense that solo performer and accompanist rarely achieve.

The CD itself has something for all tastes. From the specially written piece titled "Cantabile for Cornet", written by none other than son David Bremner, to the more well known pieces of "Ave Maria", "Pastorale" and "Londonerry Air".

"Cantabile": ‘Singable or 'in a singing style, hence with the melody smoothly performed and well brought out'.
