Jubilation by the Lindley Band is a CD that resulted from a number of ideas, one of which was the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of Queen Elizabeth II. Music was collected from British composers and arrangers from the last 50 years to put together an entertaining disc.

This is a neat and tidy performance from the band, which stems from the direction of their conductor Neil Jowett. The music on this CD journeys into the very traditional era of hymn playing with a beautiful rendition of "Crimond" to the modern arrangements of film music with "The Gael" arranged by Andy Duncan. The disc includes mostly well known favourites such as "I Got Rhythm", "Be a Clown" and "Londonderry Air". One new item included on this disc, "Great Redeemer: Processional and Hymn" is especially arranged for this recording by Dr. Philip Wilby. This piece includes some off stage playing by the cornets and trombones, and despite the listener not gaining the full benefit of these effects, it is well played and full of emotion.

There are five soloists on this disc and all but one play slow melodies. The solo arrangement of "Demelza" for soprano cornet is well played by Denise Dransfield and there is some sensitive playing in "Swedish Hymn" featuring cornet player Glyn Nash. It is refreshing to hear something a little different from the general style of the disc with James Curnow's "Rhapsody for Euphonium" played by James Fieldhouse towards the end the release.

This CD is full of pieces that at one time or another were our favourites. As a celebration style disc, these items are appropriately chosen and very well put together. The production team has done a sound job with balance and editing and have adequately rewarded the bands efforts in making this release.

The only thing lacking is information about the band in the sleeve notes. This is often a major avenue to educate new and old supporters of the band regarding its life and history, so perhaps this was a chance that went missing.

This release is not without its blemishes or indiscretions, but they are not going to offend. It is an honest recording of a band that has obviously put time and effort into making his CD. "Jubilation" is not going to break into the world market, but nor should it have to. This CD is a well directed collection of favourites played by a good quality brass band.
