Grimethorpe will be linking up with new partners to expand its youth initiative

2019 will see Grimethorpe Colliery Band roll out an ambitious expansion of its successful Youth Band programme into new areas of the UK.

The first event will take place on Saturday 2nd February at the Albemarle Centre in Hull with collaborative support from a number of regional music service providers from Hull, East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire.

The aim is to provide an enjoyable educational programme of brass and percussion workshops for up to 50 young musicians.

Vision

A band spokesperson told 4BR: "Grimethorpe has a vision to inspire a new and wider generation of young people to experience everything that a good musical education through a brass band has to offer.

The band has a worldwide reputation for creativity and innovation and we believe we offer the unique ability to reach out to young people and to create a deep and lasting legacy of brass band participation throughout more communities."

Leadership

The free initiative is being led by inspirational figures John Doyle and Garry Oglesby, and supported by members of Grimethorpe Colliery Band.

Sessions will be provided on the day to young players aged up to 19, with a team of players guiding them through a challenging and enjoyable programme of rehearsals, sectionals and a concert finale to which parents, family members and friends will be made welcome.

We believe that a sustainable 'legacy' programme cannot be provided through a short-term burst of interest and excitement but, rather, through an offering of long-term pathwaysGrimethorpe Band

Sustainable

The spokesperson added: "We believe that a sustainable 'legacy' programme cannot be provided through a short-term burst of interest and excitement but, rather, through an offering of long-term pathways that help young people continue their interests into adulthood.

In short, Grimethorpe Colliery Band aims to continue to help inspire young people, as we have done for decades, to embark upon and embrace a musical habit for life."

In response, James Dickinson, Head of the Hull Music Service who are hosting the initiative at the Albemarle Music Centre, added: "We're delighted to be hosting such an exciting event. It will be wonderful for young brass players from across the region to have the opportunity to work with such experienced and inspirational musicians."
