The Delph Band recently did their own version of the famous hospital bed scene from the film 'Brassed Off' to help MD Phil Goodwin on the road to recovery.
Hospital visit
Their efforts were reported in the local Oldham Chronicle newspaper, and reported that the band made the trek to the Royal Oldham Hospital to serenade Phil as he recovers from a recent health tests.
30 years
Phil has been directing the band for over 30 years as well as being an integral member of the Black Dyke bass section, and was delighted to have a visit from 15 members of the band.
He’s a great man and we all really missed him. I cleared the idea with the hospital of bringing the band along to cheer him up and they gave us permission to playPhil Shaw
Idea
Phil’s wife Jacqui, and daughter, Rebecca, who had appeared in the stage version of the film “Brassed Off,” dreamed up the idea of re-enacting a scene from the film, and so the players performed ‘Danny Boy’ for their MD.
Team effort
Phil Shaw told the newspaper: "It was a real team effort and a big surprise. We kept it a closely guarded secret. Phil has been in hospital for three weeks. He’s a great man and we all really missed him. I cleared the idea with the hospital of bringing the band along to cheer him up and they gave us permission to play."
