Composer Peter Meechan has told 4BR of his delight at winning the £500 award at Brass in Concert for the ‘Best New Composition or Arrangement’ at the contest.
Classic rock
Peter’s arrangement of the classic Queen rock item ‘Innuendo’ took the Cyril Beere Memorial Trophy after it was performed as part of Scottish Champion, Whitburn’s programme.
Trio of pieces
Whitburn and their conductor Steven Mead also included two other Meechan arrangements on the day – the red hot opener Chick Corea ‘Spain’ and the bright and breezy Scottish reel ‘Journeyman Jigs’.
I do need some new software for my computer, but as Liverpool are doing so well in the Premiership at the moment, it may well be spent on a new season ticket for AnfieldPeter Meechan
Thanks
"Steve asked me to be involved in the Whitburn programme, and I thoroughly enjoyed it," Peter told 4BR. "’Innuendo’ is a great Queen piece and I thought it would make for a really effective item for brass band. I think Whitburn played it brilliantly, especially Russell Bennett on trumpet, so I have a great deal to thank them all for."
MacBeth
The award is the latest recognition for the composer, who ‘MacBeth’ last year was one of the test piece highlights of the year.
"It’s nice to write and arrange something a bit different now and again for brass bands and I have quite a few ideas up my sleeve in the coming months."
Season ticket
So will the money by used wisely then? "I do need some new software for my computer, but as Liverpool are doing so well in the Premiership at the moment, it may well be spent on a new season ticket for Anfield!"
