News and results from the 2008 Western Australian Festival of Brass.

WA Festival of Brass
 

The 2008 Western Australian Festival of Brass was held on Saturday November 1. This follows the success of the inaugural event in 2007.

The concept being an event that has no rules or regulations but provides an opportunity for brass bands to perform in a contest situation.

The Bands

This year six bands took part:

Silver Threads, Irwin Palmer OAM
City of Perth, Brian Underwood
Melville AFA, Steven Harmer
Canning City, Geoff Lowe and Andrew Sutherland
WA Brass (formerly Midland Brick Brass), Gareth Jones
Busselton Shire, Nicky Hair

Silver Threads, City of Perth, and Melville AFA performed their entertainment programs but chose not to be adjudicated.

The Own Choice Test event had two entrants both performing Peter Graham works: Canning City — Dimensions, and WA Brass — On Alderley Edge.

Own Choice

1. WA Brass, On Alderley Edge (Graham) 92 + 0 = 92
2. Canning City, Dimensions (Graham) 81 + 6 = 87

The Entertainment Contest included individual awards for Hymn, March, Soloist and Entertainment.

Judges were Ed Martin and Peter Younghusband for music and ABC radio presenter Ted Bull for Entertainment.

June 15 • The musical partnership between Allan Withington and Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band came to an end in France with a memorable musical flourish.

June 15 • The recent Black Dyke Brass Festival marked the retirement of administrator Alison Childs.

Tintwistle Band

June 15 • We have a vacancy for soprano cornet, and with lots of exciting engagements coming up would love to get this seat filled!. As a second section band,we rehearse every Monday and Thursday 8-10pm at our bandroom in Tintwistle under the baton of MD Jim Henson.


Cambrian Brass

June 14 • We are always happy to hear from anyone interested in joining our friendly, supportive band - whether you are returning to banding, looking for a new challenge, or moving to Aberystwyth for university.


Chinnor Silver

June 13 • We are looking for a Bb TUBA player to join our friendly,enthusiastic,progressive 1st section band.. Rehearsals are on a Wednesday and held in our own bandroom.. We have a varied but realistic calendar planned with possible overseas trip in 2027
