News and results from the 2008 Western Australian Festival of Brass.

The 2008 Western Australian Festival of Brass was held on Saturday November 1. This follows the success of the inaugural event in 2007.

The concept being an event that has no rules or regulations but provides an opportunity for brass bands to perform in a contest situation.

The Bands

This year six bands took part:

Silver Threads, Irwin Palmer OAM
City of Perth, Brian Underwood
Melville AFA, Steven Harmer
Canning City, Geoff Lowe and Andrew Sutherland
WA Brass (formerly Midland Brick Brass), Gareth Jones
Busselton Shire, Nicky Hair

Silver Threads, City of Perth, and Melville AFA performed their entertainment programs but chose not to be adjudicated.

The Own Choice Test event had two entrants both performing Peter Graham works: Canning City — Dimensions, and WA Brass — On Alderley Edge.

Points + Handicap = Total

Own Choice

1. WA Brass, On Alderley Edge (Graham) 92 + 0 = 92
2. Canning City, Dimensions (Graham) 81 + 6 = 87

The Entertainment Contest included individual awards for Hymn, March, Soloist and Entertainment.

Judges were Ed Martin and Peter Younghusband for music and ABC radio presenter Ted Bull for Entertainment.

BBE to spearhead campaign for brass band UNESCO recognition

March 12 • Brass Bands England is hoping that people will help support the campaign to to get brass banding added to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Inventory.

Oxted Band

March 13 • CORNET & TROMBONE - Our friendly, ambitious band is looking for a Cornet player (position negotiable) and Trombonists (1st and Bass) to complete our line up for 2026. Led by MD Darrell Scholes, we have a wide range of engagements and events planned.


North Somerset Community Brass

March 13 • Cornet and bass players required. We are a fun and relaxed non contesting band and are looking to swell our numbers. Players of any instrument will be very warmly welcomed, but we would really love some more cornets and basses (instruments available).
