Entrants for the inaugural Ohio Brass Arts Festival composition contest were asked to write a contest march. The winning march was selected by combining scores from three separate panels: The Ohio Brass Arts Festival executive committee, Jagrins Music Publications (sponsor) and band members that had the opportunity to sight-read through the three marches.
This year’s winner, who will take home the $300 (approx. 150 GBP) cash prize was Battleaxe by Darrol Barry. The other two finalists, D-Day (Keith Terret) and Ohio Festival March (Nigel Hall) will receive $150 (approx. 75 GBP). All three marches were debuted at the 2008 Ohio Brass Arts Festival and will be published by Jagrins Music Publications from August.
Jagrins will again sponsor next year’s Ohio Brass Arts Festival composition contest. Entrants will be asked to write a slow melody based on a hymn or folksong. More information will be forthcoming.
