The organisers of the Butlin’s National Mineworkers Open Brass Band Festival have informed 4BR that they are resurrecting the Butlin’s Youth Championships last operated in the 1980’s.
Skegness
The event is being planned to coincide with the successful Brass Band Festival held in late January in Skegness each year, and for the first year will comprise one class only.
Criteria
The class will be open to all youth bands whose membership has not reached their 20th birthday on or before the day of the contest.
Each band will be invited to play a 20 minute programme of a march, sacred piece and own choice item.

Championships
The original championships were first ran in 1974 at the Royal Albert Hall, won in the first two years by the Tredegar Junior Band, which included in its playing membership three future conductors who went on to win National titles — Robert and Nicholas Childs and Nigel Weeks.
Other winners included Upper Rhondda Comprehensive School, Loughborough Youth and Kilmarnock Area Schools.
The famous silver trophy, is currently used as the prize for the most entertaining programme for Championship Section contest at the Mineworkers Contest in Skegness.
