Twelve year old trombonist Peter Moore has become the BBC Young Musician of the Year for 2008 after the Grand Final weekend at the Wales Millenium Centre in Cardiff.
Youngest winner
In its thirty year history, Peter has not only become the youngest ever winner of the prestigious BBC Classical Music competition but is the third brass player to win following in the footseps of Michael Hext and David Pyatt.
The trombonist, who is studying at Chetham's in Manchester and who plays with Wingates Band performed Tomasi's Trombone Concerto and Sandström's Sång til Lotta to take the coveted prize in what 4BR understands was a unanimous decision from the esteemed judging panel.
Two day final

On Saturday evening, the five finalists from the Brass, Keyboard, Percussion, Strings and Woodwind categories, performed their concerto with the BBC National of Orchestra of Wales conducted by Thierry Fischer and then on Sunday, each contestant was requested to give a reprise of one movement of their concerto (in Peter's case, the 3rd) and a piece of music of the finalists' own choice.
Winning prize
For winning the title of BBC Young Musician of the Year, Peter Moore wins £2000 and the opportunity to give a lunchtime recital at the Wigmore Hall in London this autumn after support from the Tabor Foundation. In addition, Peter will receive a travel award to put to his studies.
Showcase
When asked on BBC2 about what Peter's win mean's to his family, his father Grenville said 'I think its just been a showcase for him to show what he likes doing basically on a fantastic stage'. Grenville also told 4BR that Peter had enjoyed a 'fantastic week' and Wingates' chairman, Barry Bentley on hearing news of the win described it as 'astonishing'.
