Belgian soprano star Bert Van Thienen has told 4BR of the thrill he experienced being part of Black Dyke’s winning performance at Bradford on the weekend – and is already looking forward to being able to help the band again if required.
Fantastic
"It was a fantastic experience," he told 4BR. "To be invited to play for Black Dyke was something very special and I was thrilled to be able to accept. I was fully aware of the situation when Nicholas Childs spoke to me and I must thank Paul Duffy who supported me. He is going to be a great soprano player in the future, so I thought I’d better make the most of this chance!"
I must thank everyone at the band who made me so welcome. It was an experience I will never forgetBert Van Thienen
Electric
Bert found the atmosphere at St George’s Hall unique. "I have played in many big brass band contests, but this was electric. The atmosphere was so intense, especially as we were the last band to play. The standard of performances was amazing from the rest of the bands, but I felt we deserved the victory. I am very happy to have played my small part and I can now say I’ve played for the most famous band in the world."
Future
As for future appearances? "The current rules allow me to play for Black Dyke as well as Brass Band Willebroek but I will be honoured if they ask me again. I must thank everyone at the band who made me so welcome. It was an experience I will never forget."
