An appreciative audience enjoyed Newtown Silver Band’s Annual Concert at All Saints Church Newtown on Saturday 23rd February.
The band, resplendent in its new uniform was joined by the Newtown Junior Band, both bands under the Musical Direction of Steve Edwards.
A varied selection of music was played by both bands including solo items by David Gardner, principal cornet, Robin Midgley soprano and Del Thomas euphonium. David Gardner was later joined by Helen Pryce and Martin Tomkins for a cornet trio, whilst the compere was Helen Bennett.
The band is now looking forward to competing in the Second Section at the Welsh Regional Championships at the Brangwyn Hall, Swansea on Saturday 8th March4BR
Junior Awards
During the course of the evening the Annual Awards were made.
For the juniors, the Ron Griffiths Cup for 'Most Improved Learner' went to Sean Perks, whilst the Junior Shield for 'Most Improved Junior' was won by Joseph Thomas. The Royal Mail Cup for 'Junior Bandperson of the Year' was presented to Tom Griffiths.
Senior Awards
In the Senior Band the Ken Barrett Shield for 'Most Improved Player' was awarded to Eifion Thomas, whilst the Harry Leach Cup for 'Senior Band person of the Year' was won by Alan Breeze. The Trefor Evans Memorial Cup for 'Soloist of the Year' went to Paul Lloyd. All awards were selected and presented by the band’s musical director Steve Edwards.
The recipient of the Ian Bainbridge Memorial Cup, selected by the band committee, for the person who has contributed most to the band was presented to Del Thomas by the President of the Band, John Bennett.
Looking forward
The band is now looking forward to competing in the Second Section at the Welsh Regional Championships at the Brangwyn Hall, Swansea on Saturday 8th March.
Following that they will be preparing for a four day visit over the Easter weekend to the City of Dublin where they will take part in two concerts.
