St Athan gain the Sykes experience

Steve Sykes brings his experience and humour to the St Athan Band in time for the Swansea Area contest.

RAF St Athan

The RAF St Athan Voluntary Band recently held their annual dinner which also gave them an opportunity to benefit from the vast experience of their special guest, Steve Sykes.

Workshop

Steve held a workshop during the afternoon on the First Section area test piece, 'James Cook — Circumnavigator'.

The afternoon’s rehearsal was enjoyed by everyone and gave an opportunity to share some of Steve’s knowledge as a conductor on the piece. The Band was also pleased to welcome Steve’s wife, who kindly agreed to sit in on rep for the workshop. The band is now looking forward to Steve returning prior to the Area contest when he will further assist with the band’s preparations for Swansea.

In a departure from the band’s usual pre Christmas Dinner, the event was moved into January this year. This allowed the band members to recover from the 25 jobs undertaken in 20 days during December!!4BR

Pre Christmas rush

During the course of the evening Steve regaled the assembled band and their friends with several amusing anecdotes of his experiences at the top of the banding game. Steve kindly presented the Band’s annual awards.
