The Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) has secured major philanthropic investment to help widen access for students to professional careers in classical music.
Reportedly more than £400,000 in total it will be used to expand its Early Career Development and Opportunities Programme, building on two existing initiatives: the Creative Innovators Award and RNCM Junior Fellowships.
It will also help support students with financial challenges as they transition from education into the profession.
Creative Innovators Award
It is understood that the Creative Innovators Award, presented in partnership with Yamaha, will enable students to pitch for funding of up to £5,000 to develop their own creative ideas and projects. A new strand will also extend this support to recent alumni seeking to develop and sustain their projects, with seed funding and mentoring.
The RNCM stated that it hoped that the initiative will double the number of annual awards available.
Junior Fellowships
The Junior Fellowships programme will support graduates in bridging the gap between conservatoire training and professional practice. It will offer 13 supported fellowships over three years for graduates who have experienced barriers to entering the profession.
The RNCM stated that it hoped the programme will support emerging artists to develop professional skills, build networks, gain industry experience, test entrepreneurial ideas, and establish sustainable portfolio careers within the classical music sector.
The programmes which launched in Autumn 2026 coincides with the RNCM's new 10-year strategic plan.
