Belgian composer and performer Stan Nieuwenhuis is set to launch his latest innovative project entitled 'Etudes for cornet and electronics' — working with his mother, the critically acclaimed artist Monique Francois, and coder 'Wassilyevich'.
It forms part of his wider solo project 'Stann', and sees him expand on an original idea to make an interaction between his music and the abstract geometric art created by his mother and creative coding moving designs created from it by his friend.
Something visual
Speaking about it he said: "A year ago, I presented some new music that I thought could use 'something visual' to enhance it. The perfect person for that was my mother — an artist I have wanted to collaborate with for such a long time with my work.
I also wanted real interaction between my music and those visuals. That led me to the idea of tapping into the data I'm producing with my effect pedals and using it to actively drive the visuals."
Double bill
With the help of an expert lighting technician seven panels were created with the new project due to be premiered in November at the Rataplan in Borgerhout.
Stan will be joined in a double-bill performance with musician Ola Tunji where his playing on cornet will be accompanied by Wassilyevich's projections of different colours and light of Monique Francois' geometric art.
Not content with a solo project, Stan also revealed that he is now starting work on 'After Echoes' a new piece for brass band and live electronics which it is hoped will be premiered in 2027.
