The death has been announced of the respected North Wales bandsman Steve Edwards.
Although known in many in the Welsh banding movement as a fine player and remarkable enthusiast for brass banding, he latterly gained wider acclaim as part of the popular Brass Monkeys podcast team where his wit and insight also shone.
Enthusiastic dedication
Speaking about his fellow podcaster, Richard Hewitt told 4BR: "Steve was a childhood friend of both mine and fellow 'Brass Monkey' Doug Fletcher, and we remained linked in some way or another for well over 50 years. During this time his relentless enthusiastic dedication for brass banding in North Wales and beyond was truly inspiring."
Richard revealed that all three started their brass playing journey together at Flint Town Band where Steve learnt his craft playing E flat bass. He then went on to play for the Point of Ayr Colliery Band as they became a leading force in Welsh banding, before moving to Northop Silver and eventually leading the bass section at Holywell Band.
Holywell tribute
In paying their tribute, Holywell Band stated: "Steve was a true bandsman. He also shared his knowledge and passion for music by teaching many young beginners. It's a wonderful testament to his dedication that so many of those he taught have gone on to become amazing musicians themselves.
Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with Steve's family, friends and fellow bandsmen at this very sad time."
That was further echoed by Richard, who added: "It was never a problem for him to help out other bands such as Royal Buckley, Wrexham, Salvo Brass and Gwaun Cae Gurwen, whether it was for a rehearsal, concert or contest."
Podcaster
The Brass Monkeys Podcast started with his desire to share his passion for brass banding over a curry with his friends.
"Steve was keen to talk about brass banding history as well as celebrating the exciting new developments in the movement,"Richard added. "He was such a popular bandsman, that finding musicians and conductors to share their stories was never a challenge for him.
It goes without saying that Steve's drive and commitment to the project at times left us struggling to keep up at times, but his contribution to brass banding, and his commitment and passion for music will be remembered by all who knew him."
Tributes and condolences have been paid to his family, friends and colleagues.
