Euphonium soloist David Childs will make two appearances at The Cumnock Tryst this weekend as Sir James MacMillan's acclaimed festival welcomes leading musicians to East Ayrshire for a programme featuring a strong brass presence.

Concerto and recital

He will first take to the stage on Friday evening (2nd October — 7.30pm) with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Sir James, before joining pianist Christopher Williams for a solo recital the following morning (11.00am).

The significant brass features will culminate on Sunday evening (7.30pm) when The Wallace Collection and the cooperation band (straight from their performance at the Royal Albert Hall the previous day) provide an immersive performance of Giovanni Gabrieli's 'Canzoni et Sonate'.

Where the Lugar Meets the Glaisnock

David's appearance at Cumnock's Barony Hall on Friday evening, sees him perform MacMillan's euphonium concerto, 'Where the Lugar Meets the Glaisnock', with the BBC SSO under the composer's direction.

The work has a particularly strong connection to Cumnock. Named after the two waterways which meet in the town, the concerto is MacMillan's musical reflection on the place in which he grew up.

David will share the concert with celebrated saxophonist Jess Gillam, who performs MacMillan's 'Saxophone Concerto', while Mozart's Eine kleine Nachtmusik completes the programme.

Recital and Canzoni

The following morning, the focus turns entirely to the euphonium when David appears at Trinity Church with his long-time recital partner, pianist Christopher Williams. It will showcase the instrument with a programme including music by Cait Nishimura, Peter Graham, Ludovico Einaudi and Sir Karl Jenkins.

For the festival's closing concert on Sunday evening, the players from The Wallace Collection and the cooperation band will be positioned around the galleries of Cumnock Old Church for a surround-sound performance of Gabrieli's 'Canzoni et Sonate', first published in Venice in 1615.

The concert will also serve as a tribute to the late John Wallace who was passionate about bringing the project to Cumnock.

Founded by Cumnock-born composer Sir James MacMillan, The Cumnock Tryst has established itself as a distinctive presence in Scotland's cultural calendar, bringing internationally renowned performers into the churches and halls of the town while maintaining a close connection with the local community.
