The death has been announced of Susan Thomas, one of the most highly respected and admired Welsh brass band musicians.
She passed away peacefully on 20th June following a battle with cancer which she bore with courage, dignity and determination. She was a devoted and deeply loving mother to her children, Daniel, Nia and Owen, who alongside her husband Chris provided a wonderfully supportive family bond.
Success
Her connection to the Welsh brass band movement was also one of great personal determination and success — although as those who knew her would attest, she took greatest pride in the achievements of her family rather than herself.
However, her achievements were many and notable — right from her earliest commitment to playing with the Mid Glamorgan Youth Band and her formative playing years with Hymac (Rhymney) Band, close to where she lived throughout her life.
Outstanding musicality
A baritone player of outstanding musicality, she also enjoyed playing with Tredegar Youth Band and the National Youth Band of Wales, as well as later, with Tredegar and most notably Cory.
Her tally of major championship victories amounted to six European, eight British Open and five National titles and a World Championship, as well as multiple victories at Brass in Concert, the Welsh Area Championships and many more.
Tributes
Tributes have been paid from across the banding world from fellow players and conductors, but also many of the countless friends she always made wherever she went. She had an acute sense of musicianship to go with her wicked sense of humour and warmth of personality.
As the family has stated: "We are profoundly grateful for the kindness, care and support shown to Susan and to our family throughout her illness. We will miss her beyond measure".
