The Scottish Brass Band Association has announced the death of its honorary vice-president, Peter Fraser MBE.
Described as "a towering figure in Scottish brass banding and a devoted servant to the wider musical community for over seven decades", he was hugely respected as a man of great integrity and professionalism in the many roles he undertook in his extensive banding career.
Tributes
Tributes have been paid from all over the banding world — many from former players who spoke fondly of his support and encouragement.
His lifelong connection to the Kirkintilloch Band as a player, manager, administrator, mentor and, ultimately, President of the organisation gave him great insight into the many challenges faced by Scottish bands at all levels. He enjoyed 'Kirkie's' periods of outstanding success as well being a leading figure in helping them battle to overcome hurdles that came their way.
His commitment to the band and the wider Scottish banding community was remarkable — an indelible presence at Scottish competitions, many of which he led as Contest Controller.
Deeply saddened
The Kirkintilloch Band stated: "We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Peter Fraser MBE, a towering figure in Scottish brass banding and a devoted servant to the musical community for over seven decades.
Peter's connection to us spanned more than 70 years, marking one of the most remarkable periods of continuous service in the history of Scottish banding. His leadership, stability and unwavering commitment helped guide the band through triumphs, challenges, and generations of change."
Vital role
Peter Fraser also played a vital national role as a long-serving representative for the West of Scotland Brass Band Association and in his unwavering service as a coordinator for Playback Recording Service for the Blind and Visually Impaired.
The latter deservedly saw him presented with the MBE, as well as the SBBA President's Award for Outstanding Achievement, reflecting the profound impact he had on the musical landscape and disability services.
