A new Women Composers Brass Directory has been launched by content creator and digital marketing specialist Liv Richardson through her popular brass band website, 'It's Not a Trumpet'.
It aims to create an extensive database of works by female composers — from test-pieces to concert works, solos to ensemble repertoire.
Go unnoticed
Liv, who was a recently a featured contributor to the Brass Bands England annual conference told 4BR: "While researching an article on major brass works by women, I realised how difficult it was to find this music in one place.
There are so many outstanding pieces for contests, concerts, and soloists written by women, yet they often go unnoticed simply because people don't know where to look.
After the article was published, conductors and players began reaching out, asking for a list of these works. It became clear that what our community needed was a central, accessible resource — a way to make discovering and programming music by women easier for everyone."
As well as making it easier to find works, there is a form that enables our community to submit works written by women for the directoryLiv Richardson
Make it easier
Liv added: "That's what inspired the creation of the Women Composers Brass Directory. As well as making it easier to find works, there is a form that enables our community to submit works written by women for the directory.
The directory started with around 60 pieces from my initial research, but thanks to the support and enthusiasm of the banding community, we're not far off hitting my first target of 100 works, within the first few days of the directory's launch!"
