A visit from Prof Philip Wilby to a recent Dobcross Silver Band rehearsal has given everyone a musical boost ahead of their National challenge.

Dobcross Silver Band welcomed a special guest to a recent rehearsal as they continued their preparations under MD Jason M Smith for their appearance at the Cheltenham National Finals.

Composer Philip Wilby kindly dropped in on the invitation of Jason to lend his thoughts and pass on his vast experience as the band worked on the Third Section test-piece, 'Music from The Royal Palaces' by Sir Arthur Bliss.

Fantastic boost

Jason told 4BR that Philip's visit gave everyone a great music uplift. "He is a man of great dignity and kindness that the playing immediately shot up to another level with him just smiling and saying a few encouraging words to players.

It was a huge privilege to hear his thoughts on the music and its approach, and I feel we learned a great deal — especially myself."

Worked so hard

Jason added: "I just wanted to give the band who have worked so hard in the last few weeks, just that added extra insight, so who better than Philip. All we can say is thanks — its was a fantastic boost for us all."
