Grimethorpe Colliery Band euphonium star Mark Glover has just returned from Valencia in Spain where he took part in the International Tuba and Euphonium Conference.

As a guest artist, he performed with the Athena Brass Band at the Palau de la Música de Valencia.

Concerto

Athena performed works by Nicole Piunno and Willem Van Otterloo as well as accompanying Mark and fellow soloists Jannike Ellingson and SymbiosisDuo. Mark performed Brian Bowen's rarely heard concerto, 'Euphonium Music'.

The conference also saw David Childs perform Peter Graham's 'Force of Nature' concerto, whilst James Gourlay gave the world premiere of his own 'Tuba Concerto'. Hammonds Band solo euphonium Daniel Holm was the runner-up in the prestigious solo competition.

Community atmosphere

Speaking about the memorable event, Mark told 4BR: "The conference was organised by the Spanish Tuba and Euphonium Association, and it had a real community atmosphere.

It was a wonderful experience and brought together some of the finest low brass musicians from around the world."
