The death has been annucned of Denis Wick

The death has been announced of the multi-faceted musician Denis Wick, aged 93.

A leading orchestral player, conductor and educator, he was the founder of the company that bore his name, and which revolutionised the manufacture and design, first of mouthpieces, and later mutes and brass accessories.

Global success

His innovative approach and innate understanding of performance characteristics was allied to a remarkable entrepreneurial business outlook — one that saw his products sold successfully throughout the world.

The former principal trombone of the London Symphony Orchestra from 1957 to 1988, he started his company in 1968. It quickly established itself as a leading brand, helping to revolutionise the sound of orchestral brass and brass bands in particular.

His textbook, 'Trombone Technique' became a core educational and teaching publication, translated into numerous languages and used by teachers across the globe.

Denis Wick Products was presented with a Queen's Award for Enterprise in International Trade in 2013.

Further details will follow.
