Grimethorpe Colliery Band has announced the appointment of Ed Culpin as its new solo baritone player.

Ed began playing at the Leicestershire Co-op Band, before moving to Derwent Brass and more recently Carlton Main Frickley, where he performed at both the National Finals and British Open.

Soloist

An accomplished soloist, he has an impressive CV of competition success.

He is a two-time winner of the Houston Brass Band and British Open Intermediate solo events and as a member of Youth Brass 2000 won prizes at the Butlins Mineworkers Championship, Youth British Open and Youth Brass in Concert. He has also performed at several Youth European Championships.

Huge honour

Speaking about his move, Ed commented; "It's a huge honour to take on the baritone role at such a great band with so much history. I'm looking forward to so many great concert and contest performances."

In welcoming his new signing, Musical Director Ben Dixon said: "Ed is an outstanding young talent with an exciting future ahead of him. I'm delighted to welcome him to Grimethorpe."

Ed made his debut with the band over the weekend at Grimsby Auditorium, the band's first concert of 2025.
