The Uppermill Band has announced that after "an extraordinary 45 years of unwavering dedication", John Ward has retired from his role as Chairperson of the North West band.

John has been an integral part of the organisation since its formation in 1979 with his unwavering commitment and support key to its long term success both on and off the contest stage.

Stability

A spokesperson told 4BR: "John witnessed the evolution of the band, guiding it through periods of change and challenge — including more than ten musical directors. His stability though was key in allowing the organisation as a whole to thrive."

Uppermill has enjoyed success up to the First Section, and was Third Section National Champion in 2019. The band also won the North West Second Section Area title in 2020 as well as four consecutive Pontins titles between 2007 and 2010 amongst others.

Away from the contest stage John oversaw the construction and opening of a new band room in 2007 and the recording of a successful CD.

He not only shaped the band's growth but has also fostered a sense of team spirit and community that remains at its heart todayUppermill Band

He now proudly takes on the role of Honorary President, as he enters this new chapter, everyone at Uppermill Brass Band extends their deepest gratitude."

New Chairperson

The new Chairperson is Steve Hall who recently retired from the second baritone seat after 16 years of dedicated service, and who will now also work closely with MD James Garlick.
