Foden's critically acclaimed CD, 'Malcolm Arnold — Music for Brass Band' has gained further plaudits from one of the banding world's most respected musical commentators.
Paul Hindmarsh, the former Artistic Director of the RNCM Brass Band Festival, arranger and author was asked to write a review for the Malcom Arnold Society, and as with all his writings on the brass band medium it is an expertly considered and balanced appreciation of both the man and his music.
Meeting
Hindmarsh reveals that he met Arnold twice — the first when the composer was enjoying the considerable success that came following his early commercial successes of his film music and symphonies, the latter when in later life he was as he described him as "frail and taciturn, a shadow of his former self".
The observations on the music are equally pertinent — from his well-known test-piece 'Fantasy for Brass Band' to the premiere recording of 'Song of Freedom'.
