Joshua Parkhill is still savouring the opportunity given to him to work and conduct alongside Prof David King on the recent National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain Summer Course.
The talented Scotsman won the 2023 NYBBGB Conductor Competition, the prize from which was to be part of the Summer Course working as Assistant Conductor with the inspirational Australian.
The Resident Conductor of the UNISON Kinneil called the experience "transformational" as the week was capped off by him leading the band at its end of course concert in an assured account of Thomas Reves' 'Pilgrim Song' (Variations).
Positive impression
His conducting certainly made a positive impression on those in attendance, with composer Peter Graham adding: "Delighted to see Josh making his way in the profession — seems like yesterday he was a young up and coming trombone player at Ayr Salvation Army receiving lessons from my father."
Reflecting on the experience on his Facebook page, the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland graduate said: "Still struggling to put into words how transformational this past week has been for me.
It has been such an honour to work with some of the most talented young brass and percussion players in the UK. Their commitment and enthusiasm to musical and technical excellence was so inspiring. Thank you to all the members of the band for your dedication and for creating magical moments together on stage."
Finally, to Prof. David King. I truly cannot express how much of an impact you have had on me musically this weekJoshua Parkhill
Thanks
In thanking the leadership team he added: "Thank you to Mark Bromley and Bob Childs for seeing my potential and for making this all possible through the Young Conductors Competition."
He added: "Finally, to Prof. David King. I truly cannot express how much of an impact you have had on me musically this week. Thank you for everything: the rehearsals, tutorials, small chats, pep talks and guidance both inside and outside rehearsals.
I feel so lucky to have got to learn from you and look forward to continuing to learn from you in future."
