4BR has been informed that the highly respected Tony Newiss has decided to bring to an end his official association with City of Hull Band.
Ever present
Tony has been a playing member for over 24 years after initially 'helping out' on a trip to London to play an afternoon park concert in 2000. Since then he became an ever present figure and central to the band's growing success both as a performer and administrator.
He was elected Band Chairperson in 2001 and developed a close relationship with the band's President and long term sponsor Peter Shipp during their period as EYMS Band.
Overseen
A band spokesperson told 4BR: "Tony has enjoyed playing under 10 different MDs and at a dozen National Finals. He has also overseen several bandroom moves culminating in the conversion of an Industrial unit into the current excellent Maurice Metcalf rehearsal facility."
More recently Tony helped the band navigate the challenge of the Covid-19 pandemic and was instrumental in strengthening the ties between them and the local community through the 'Born on the Tide' initiative.
A recent highlight saw City of Hull perform at the dedication of the long awaited and hard fought for Lost Trawlermen`s Memorial on St Andrews Quay.
Lifelong friends
Speaking about his decision he said: "All good things come to an end at some point. I've enjoyed some great performances, lots of highs, a couple of lows and have made many good friends along the way. Having stepped down as Chairperson in 2023 the time just seems right for me to go now."
The band spokesperson added: "Tony leaves countless lifelong friends, and we would all like to thank him for all that he has done for the band and wish him well in whatever he chooses to do next — although we suspect it may involve his beloved fishing rod!"
