Murley Silver Band recently started its 100th anniversary celebrations with a full house concert held in Fivemiletown Co. Tyrone.
The concert marked what will be a year long series of celebratory events for the band that has proudly represented Northern Ireland on three occasions at the European Championships, helped by the incredible support it has received from its local community.
Poetic tribute
Led by conductor Stephen Crooks and with the history of the band recalled by presenter Beverley Weir it was a memorable evening. Her poetic tribute summed the evening up perfectly:
Tonight, we've celebrated the first one hundred years,
The most outstanding moments, the triumphs the tears,
From a little hut at Murley Cross to international stage,
The Band has grown and flourished and has truly come of age.
Performances came from band soloists James Cooke, Robert Wilson and Noel Trimble, whilst following the final item the band was greeted with a standing ovation from the people of Clogher Valley.
Friends
Giving his thanks in return, Band co-Chairperson Stephen Bloomfield also announced that he newly formed 'Friends of Murley' had been set up offer ongoing support for the band.
With further concerts and family days organised 2024 will culminate in a grand formal dinner in November.
