An evening of firsts at Brass in Concert Gala Concert

Five premiere performances from Fountain City, BONE-AFIDE and Isobel Daws will form part of a full evening of brass entertainment at the Glasshouse ahead of Brass in Concert.

The forthcoming World of Brass in Concert gala concert is set to feature no fewer than five world premieres.

The event on Friday 17th November will see Fountain City Brass Band under the direction of Dr Joseph Parisi fly in form the USA to perform with the BONE-AFIDE trombone quartet.

Firsts

The quintet of world firsts include new works from Callum Au, as well as exciting new arrangements by the likes of Chris King and Adam Taylor of music from J.S Bach to Duke Ellington.

The evening concert at the Glasshouse International Centre for Music (formerly Sage Gateshead), will be the prelude to the next day's Brass in Concert Championship. It will be hosted by Frank Renton and will also feature the remarkable solo talents of Isobel Daws performing Gordon Langford's 'Rhapsody for Trombone'.

The concert also rounds off a full day of Friday 'Aspire' activity, with the energetic programme also including Bach through to Coldplay including innovative collaborations between the Americans and the trombone ensemble.

Memorable evening

Speaking about the concert, Brass in Concert CEO, Nigel Stevens told 4BR: "This promises to be a memorable evening, boosted by those world premieres.

BONE-AFIDE is a tremendously versatile chamber group comprising some of Europe's leading young trombonists, and between them and Fountain City Brass, we can expect a vibrant occasion that will really get Brass in Concert in the swing for the contest on the Saturday."

Speaking about her appearance at the event, Isobel Daws added: "I've great memories of playing at Brass in Concert as a player and I'm really excited to be returning as the guest soloist to play alongside both BONE-AFIDE and Fountain City.

It's always a joy to play to such an enthusiastic brass-loving audience, but this time I'm especially looking forward to performing 'Rhapsody for Trombone', the piece I played in winning BBC Radio 2's Young Brass Award in 2017."

Fountain City meanwhile will also feature music by John Mackey and Chick Corea among others.

The concert starts at 7.45pm on Friday 17th November at the Glasshouse, Gateshead.

Tickets are priced at £25 + booking fee and can be purchased from the Glasshouse website.

A 15% discount will be applied for all events when additionally purchasing tickets for the Brass in Concert Championship and Aspire concert.
