Two movements of 'Rhythm of Light' written by composer Liz Lane to celebrate the life and work of the renowned British sculptor Barbara Hepworth (1903-1975), are to be performed several times during the 'Towner 100 Celebration Day' in Eastbourne on Saturday 27th May.
Premiere
'Landscapes' and 'Shadow cast by the sun' are part of the work originally commissioned by the Hepworth Band with Arts Council England National Lottery Project Grant Funding which was premiered in 2021 at the Hepworth Museum Wakefield by the band.
On this occasion it will be performed by South Coast Brass conducted by Ian Stewart, formed from players from across the south coast of England.
'Landscapes' is inspired by a quote given by the sculptor in a 1961 BBC film about her work: "Moving through and over the West Riding landscape with my father in his car, the hills were sculptures; the roads defined the forms."
'Shadow cast by the sun' reflects on her thoughts published in 'Carvings and Drawing' from 1952: "Every shadow cast by the sun from an ever-varying angle reveals the harmony of the inside to outside."
