The Shirley Band has paid a musical tribute to its former President, Donald Hodesdon.
'Don' as was known by the band, passed away in the Spring of 2020. He had joined in 1940, following in the footsteps of his grandfather and band founder, William H Hodesdon.
Stalwart
Apart from a brief spell away through military service Don remained a stalwart cornet player up to 2015 and administrator ever since.
The band was joined by members of the Hodesdon family, friends, former players and supporters in a celebration of his life and contribution to them, as well as the local community and the Midlands brass band movement. Guests had travelled from as far afield as Germany for the event held at St James the Great Parish Church in Shirley.
Resurgam
The concert featured music that were Don's favourites, including an emotional rendition of Eric Ball's 'Resurgam' — a work that he especially enjoyed playing. A donation from the proceeds of the concert were given to the NSPCC, one of his chosen charities during his life.
Throughout the evening, compere Barry Pope recounted many stories, anecdotes and memories of a fine man and musician who touched the lives of so many people.
