Although the Guinness Book of Records has recognised 95 year old trombone player Tom Street from Heage in Derbyshire as the longest serving man to play in a brass band with close to 83 years of dedicated service and counting, it seems that a Dutch Harmony Band may have a record holder of their own.
97 years of age
The Klankwijzer on-line website which covers the wind band movement in The Netherlands has reported on the recent retirement of 97 year old tuba player Klaas Analbers after 86 years of playing.
Klaas performed with the Royal Harmony of St Joseph Band from Oldenzaal all his life, both as a player (starting on trumpet) and as an administrator — including 16 years as President.
Close knit community
The report stated that he started in 1936 and although he still said that he felt healthy, he admitted that "the bass is now too heavy for me."
The secret to his longevity he said was that he enjoyed the "close-knit community"of the band.
