The huge contribution made by Allan Withington to the cultural life of the city of Stavanger, as well as to the successful enhancing of the artistic and competitive profile of Stavanger Brass Band, was marked recently by a special presentation event.
Retirement
As reported on 4BR, Allan announced that he was to leave his role as Musical Director of the band after 17 years. It followed his retirement as a player with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and his decision to make his base in the city.
During his tenure Stavanger won a trio of Norwegian National Championships as well as four consecutive Siddis Entertainment titles. He also led them to success at the North American Championships and French Open, as well as claiming a trio of podium finishes at the European Championships.
Farewell Party
At the 'Farewell Party' the tributes were led by the Mayor of Stavanger, Kari Nessa Nordtun.
In a specially recorded message she said that Allan and the band had been "an amazing combination"that had been a "major contributor to an organisation constantly pushing boundaries in keeping Stavanger at the very top of Norwegian banding and amongst the leading bands in the world".
The Mayor added that together they had represented Stavanger "in an outstanding way", one that had "moved and touched audiences with their musical expression both nationally and internationally".

Heartfelt thanks
Presentations were also made with Stavanger Band Chairperson Anders Rydberg telling 4BR: "It was a wonderful occasion and one where we could all express our heartfelt thanks to Allan and his family for what they have done for the band and for the city.
He added: "We cannot thank him enough both on the contest stage and on the concert platform. We wish Allan all the best for future projects and will always maintain our friendship with him."
