Former National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain principal cornet player becomes co-principal trumpet of the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

  Thomas Nielsen becomes the new co-principal trumpet of the LPO

Former National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain (NYBBGB) principal cornet Tom Nielsen has been appointed co-principal trumpet of the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

The 2018 BBC Radio 2 Young Brass Award comes from a well-known Salvationist Army background and followed his father in performing with the International Staff Band.

During his time with the NYBBGB he won the Harry Mortimer and Philip McCann Cornet awards an unprecedented four years in succession.

Proud line

He follows in a proud line of former principal cornet player of the NYBBGB to go onto the enjoy careers with the leading professional orchestras — starting with Maurice Murphy and including at present, Philip Cobb (BBC Symphony Orchestra), James Fountain (London Symphony Orchestra) and Tom Fountain (Ulster Orchestra)

A BMus (Hons) graduate of the Guildhall School of Music where he was taught by Paul Beniston and Anne McAneney (whom he now joins in the LPO section), he has also performed with a number of leading bands as both soloist and member.

In recent years he has also performed with the London Symphony Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, BBC Philharmonic and Aurora Orchestra.
