One of the longest conducting tenures in British brass banding has come to an end with the news that Dave Pegram has stepped down from leading Chinnor Silver Band after 43 years at the helm.
Under his direction he led the band to numerous contest and concert successes — including the London & Southern Counties Third Section Area title in 2016 and a number of victories at the Oxfordshire & District, London & Hone Counties, SCABA, Swindon and Gloucestershire BBA contests.
Immense
A spokesperson told 4BR: "David has been an immense force taking the band from the Fourth to Second Section. The 2016 Area victory led to a fine fourth place finish at the National Final.
He has been the linchpin of the band and everyone is really sorry to see him stepping down. We owe him a massive debt of gratitude and we wish him a very happy retirement, although we also hope he still remains very much part of our musical family for many years to come."
Loved every minute
In response, Dave said: "I've loved every minute of the past four decades and I know I will miss leading the band but I feel the time is right to step down and take a break. I wish the band and its new MD, Ollie, every good wish for the future."
New MD
As Dave stated, the new MD is Oliver Hallstead-Brooks who is currently serving with the Central Band of the RAF after graduating from the Royal College of Music.
He stated: "I look forward to building on the secure foundation built by Dave Pegram, and I relish the opportunity to lead the band at the Area contest in 2023 and beyond."
