Trombone virtuoso Ian Bousfield will be heading to the UK from his home in Switzerland later this month to inspire players with his musical vision and performance.
As reported on 4BR he will be giving the keynote speech at the forthcoming Brass Bands England Conference in Sale on Saturday 22d October.
York appearance
The following day however he will head to the Creative Centre at York St John University (YO31 7EX) where he will perform with York Railway Institute Band led by MD, David Lancaster (7.30pm).
The focal point of the concert will be his performance of David's 'Becoming Winter' — one of his lyrical song cycle works.
Incredible musician
Speaking it, David told 4BR: "As a composer who began his musical life with brass bands, its somewhat strange that most of my work nowadays is outside the medium.
I've just had a new CD of my choral music recorded, and next up is a saxophone quartet, so its good to be able to get to write something for such an incredible musician."
He added: "Ian hasn't forgotten about his roots in York, and earlier this year we started to discuss the possibility of him coming over to work with local teachers and students and to give a concert with the band.
When it came to programming Ian asked if there was anything of mine he could include and he suggested that I transcribe some of my songs for trombone and band."
The song begins with the words 'An autumn day will breathe' so I came up with the title 'Becoming Winter' for the new piece. I couldn't wish for a finer soloist for my piece than IanDavid Lancaster
Lyrical
David continued: "We struck a compromise in that I arranged one of my songs and linked it into a band arrangement of a spikier work entitled 'Holly' to make a more substantial piece that allowed Ian to demonstrate his beautiful lyrical playing.
The song begins with the words 'An autumn day will breathe' so I came up with the title 'Becoming Winter' for the new piece. I couldn't wish for a finer soloist for my piece than Ian."
Following his concert in York, Ian will appear at the British Trombone Festival, held at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire on 30th October, and will include the work there.
