4BR has been informed that John Maines is to leave his role as Musical Director of Bodmin Town Band in Cornwall.
It marks the end of a highly successful and satisfying nine-year tenure for the vastly experienced conductor and follows the decision to move back to the North West.
Reinvigorated
John initially took over at Bodmin in order to take them to the 2013 Third Section National Finals. A fine top-six finish was the start of a tenure that saw a reinvigorated band go on to win titles at the famous Bugle and SWBBA events as well as secure West of England Area titles in 2017 and again in 2022 — the latter on what was to be his last competitive appearance with them.
Bodmin will now return to the Championship Section in 2023 for the first time since 2006.
Fantastic people
John told 4BR: "I've really enjoyed my time with Bodmin and working with a fantastic set of people who are part of a professional and hardworking organisation. I will really miss the camaraderie and the great times we have had together.
Although I am sad to be leaving I feel that I leave them in great shape with lots to build on and I wish them every success in the future."
