Grimethorpe Colliery Band has announced the appointment of Jamie Smith as Principal Cornet.
The former National Youth Band of Great Britain principal cornet was previously co-principal with the band in 2015 before moving to flugel in 2017.
He later enjoyed tenures as 'top-man' at Hammonds and Flowers and remains a member of the award winning A4 Brass Quartet as well as being Musical Director of Hade Edge Band.
Musical standards
Speaking about the appointment he said: "I'm delighted to be returning to Grimethorpe. It's a band with such a rich and unique history, and one that demands the highest musical standards. I'm excited to get started for what I hope will be a fruitful partnership."
Responding to the news Musical Director David Thornton added: "I'm delighted. I've been so impressed by his performances both with the A4 Brass Quartet and Flowers over the last few years. He's the perfect fit for us."
He added: "Jamie is passionate about banding and particularly Grimethorpe and I look forward to him helping me shape the band's musical future."
The news followed the resignation of Ian Culross, who ended his second spell as principal cornet following the band's appearance as part of the European Brass Band Championships in Birmingham.

Tribute
A spokesperson for the band said: "We would like to pay tribute to the enormous contribution Iain has made to Grimethorpe. With increased travelling pressures, the high level of commitment needed to play with one of the world's busiest brass bands was difficult to sustain, but the band are indebted to him for leading them with such class and flair.
David Thornton added: "I'd also like to thank Iain Culross for his leadership and playing since I've been with Grimethorpe. His versatility as a musician will always mean he's in great demand, and I wish him all the best for the future."
Jamie's first concerts with Grimethorpe will include 'Brassed Off Live' at the Royal Albert Hall on 25th May, following which they will travel to Switzerland to perform at the KKL Concert Hall in Lucerne on 2nd July.
