Sixty-five talented young performers recently enjoyed their musical experience on the four day residential Easter Course of the National Youth Brass Band of Scotland based at Strathallan School in Perthshire.
The combined forces of the senior and reserve bands were led by Musical Directors Ian Porthouse and John Boax and worked on an eclectic programme of music.
Euro prep
This included 'Corineus' by Christopher Bond and own-choice music in preparation for their appearance in the Development Section of the European Youth Brass Band Championships at Symphony Hall, Birmingham at the end of the month.
Together with Alan Fernie, the players also enjoyed intense rehearsals, section and individual tuition, although unfortunately due to Ill health, Conductor Emeritus Richard Evans was unable to join them.
The end of course concert took place on Thursday afternoon in front of family and friends, with Johan leading them in the test-piece as well as 'Elegy for Dunkirk' and the baritone solo 'Carrickfergus' played by Charley Boax.
Ian Porthouse led the second half which included music by Vaughan Williams, Alan Fernie, and Joseph Turrin before finishing with the rousing sounds of 'The Gael' form 'last of the Mohicans' by Dougie Maclean.
Wonderful few days
Speaking about the course, Ian told 4BR: "It was another wonderful few days. The organisation from the school and the Scottish Brass Band Association was first class and the players were outstanding.
John, Alan and Breet Baker who joined us were inspirational and I'm sure the youngsters are going to do Scotland proud when John leads them at the European Championships in Birmingham at the end of the month."
