The premiere recording of Edward Gregson's Ivor Award winning composition, 'The Salamander and the Moonraker' has been just been released by the Halle Orchestra on YouTube for a worldwide audience to enjoy.
The work, which is described as 'an adventure story in music', is inspired by the adventures of children caught up in the magical realms beyond Earth, and begins when they encounter a 'strange' voice echoing from a gigantic balloon telling them of the plight of the Moonraker, held captive by the god Thor.
Colourful text
The music which also features the wonderful voices of the Halle Childrens Choir is laid out on a large canvas, and features important parts for piano, harp, and percussion. It lasts around 35 minutes with the colourful text written by Susan Gregson.
The work was premiered at Bridgewater Hall in Manchester in July 2018, and went on to win the 'Amateur or Young Performers' category at the 2019 Ivors Composer Awards.
