Edward Gregson will celebrate his 75th birthday today, with congratulations and best wishes sure to find their way to him from all over the world as he relaxes at home.
The landmark would of course have been celebrated later this year with world premiere performances around Europe of his latest major work for the brass band medium, 'The World Rejoicing' (Variations on a Lutheran Chorale) — although due to the Coronavirus pandemic he will have to wait a little longer for that particular present to be unwrapped!
However, his birthday will also be noted on national radio this morning with a broadcast of the final movement of his Violin Concerto at 8.30am on Petroc Trelawny's Radio 3 'Breakfast' show with the final movement of his Saxophone Concerto at 9.35am on 'Essential Classics'.
