Edward Gregson wrote 'Connotations' — a work that rejuvenated the theme and variations test-piece concept for the 1977 National Championships of Great Britain at the Royal Albert Hall.
Huge impression
It made a huge impression on players, conductors and audience alike. With it's inventive scoring approach, nods of appreciation, hallmark moments and stunning climax it quickly became a firm favourite across the banding globe — leading Gregson to write a series of iconic works for the medium.
However, as Stephen reveals, the brass band movement's great good fortune came about after the composer received initial disappointment from a famous source.
