Old Silkstone Band has announced that the talented George Newbould has agreed to lead the band.

Although they have taken the difficult decision not to compete at the Yorkshire Regional Championships this year, they believe the future looks good under his direction for the rest of 2020 and beyond.

Youthful experience

George started playing with Loxley Silver Band before moving to Thoresby Colliery at 15 years of age.

He was eventually appointed principal cornet at 19 and whilst studying Material Engineering at Loughborough University he was awarded a University Music Scholarship and made regular trips to play with the University of Nottingham Brass Band, where he also conducted.

He has since guest conducted a number of Championship Section bands in the Midlands, including Foresters Brass and Thoresby Colliery.

He is incredibly talented and brings a new energy to the band and we are all excited to see what this year will bringThoresby Colliery Band

Looking forward

A band spokesperson told 4BR: "The band has one of its busiest years ahead with a variety of different concerts and contests.

We are already hard at work with George putting us through our paces on entertaining and somewhat challenging concert programme repertoire which we are looking forward to performing.

He is incredibly talented and brings a new energy to the band and we are all excited to see what this year will bring."
