Peak time banding on Christmas Day

Forget Gavin & Stacey — and enjoy an hour long special spotlighting a great community band in Wales on Christmas Day instead...

Crwbin
The hour long programme features Crwbin Band

After the high profile national television coverage given to brass bands this year with the excellent 'Our Lives' and 'Battle of the Bands' series on BBC Wales and Sky Arts, you can now enjoy another great programme on Christmas Day itself on the Welsh language S4C channel.

9.00pm

The hour long 'Cefn Gwald' will be broadcast at 9.00pm and follows the members of Crwbin Silver Band, based near Carmarthen in west Wales as they prepare for their annual Christmas Concert.

The series has been broadcast for 35 years as a popular part of the channel's output, with presenter Dai Jones and his team meeting up with the people and organisations that form the backbone of rural communities in Wales.

The community based band was formed back in 1891 and reformed in the year 2000. They currently play in the Second Section and came runner-up in the 2018 Welsh League series.

This has been a great high profile opportunity, one that we hope shows the importance to the health of Welsh musical life of community brass bands such as CrwbinAndrew Jones

High profile

The band is led by conductor Andrew Jones — universally known in Welsh banding as 'Genghis' — and a local lad who has played with the likes of Cory and Tredegar as well as enjoying a successful professional musical career.

Speaking to 4BR he said: "This has been a great high profile opportunity, one that we hope shows the importance to the health of Welsh musical life of community brass bands such as Crwbin.

It was great fun to be a part of and although it's on at the same time as the return of that other great bit of Welsh television with Gavin & Stacey, you can enjoy the programme on the night or with the S4C 'On Demand' service which also comes with subtitles — so there's no excuse to miss it!"
