40 talented young players from across the Midlands area recently met for the first North East Midlands Youth Band (NEMYB) course of the new academic year, supported by the Geneva Group.
The band was established in 2016 by Martin Heartfield and has grown in popularity.
Leads
Led by Brett Baker (Black Dyke), with tutors Gary Wyatt (Desford), Mike Walsh (Hammonds) and leading percussionist Adie Smith, the players took part in sectionals and full band rehearsals.
There was also a warm welcome for players and students from Skelmanthorpe Band and Huddersfield University, who worked with the younger and newest members.
The ethos of the North East Midlands Youth Band is to inspire young people aged 8-18 (and in full time education) who have already achieved Grade 3 standard.
Concert finale
A busy day was spent preparing repertoire that included 'Kingdom of Dragons', 'Blackbird Special', 'Lady Stewart's Air' and 'Highland Cathedral'. The day concluded with a short concert to a packed audience of parents and supporters.
Youth Band Director Martin Heartfield told 4BR: "I'm grateful that with the support of the Geneva Group, NEMBBA and the Shirland Welfare Band organisation the future of this young band is secure again.
With the numbers growing each course, we are all looking forward to meeting again in the new year with a concert planned in June."
