Council to continue to back Saddleworth Whit Friday contests

Oldham Council has put the funding record straight after they state a campaign of misinformation was spread about the future financial backing of their famous Whit Friday events.

Whit Friday
The Whit Friday contests are famous all over the world

Despite rumours circulating in many local media outlets that funding for the Saddleworth Whit Friday Contests was under threat, it has been reported that Oldham Council will continue to give vital financial support for the famous events.

Concerns

It was reported in the regional Oldham Evening Chronicle newspaper that concerns had been raised following the demise of the Saddleworth & Lees District Executive.

However, the Oldham Labour group stated that the malicious rumours were nothing but "a continued campaign to spread misinformation and worry."

Reassure

The newspaper reported Councillor Sean Fielding, Leader of Oldham Council stating: "I'd like to reassure people that the council's backing of the contests was never in doubt.

We'll not only continue to give financial support but also thousands of pounds in officer time helping to co-ordinate things before, on the day and clearing up after."

He added: "As a former member of a brass band I know how much the band contests mean to the players, residents and the borough.

The whole day is about much more than brass bands. It's a great community run event which brings people from all over the country, and beyond, to Saddleworth."

Put to bed

He concluded: "Hopefully, the rumours and stories about the council not funding the contests will now be put to bed and the organisers can get on with sorting out next year's event, knowing they have our full support."

Vital

In response to the news the respected Whit Friday organiser Bob Rodgers, coordinator of the Saddleworth & Lees contests, said: "We are delighted the council are continuing to help us.

The money provided by the council is vital to the continued success of the contests and shows how important they consider the event to the borough."
